MVYSO Young Violins Program - Registration for Fall 2024 is now open!

NEW THIS YEAR -- Students in kindergarten and first grade may register for the waitlist to form a class once enough interested students have signed up.

What is Young Violins?
Young Violins is a learn-to-play group violin program for students in grades 2 through 5. Classes will emphasize foundational building blocks to master the violin while working hard and having fun. Students will also use Music Mind Games, Rhythm Cups, and other interactive activities to learn music reading and listening skills to learn to play the violin by ear.  Practicing five times a week is important to keep up with the pace of the class. Students will be given step by step instructions on how to practice. Daily practice sessions for beginners will take about 10 minutes at the beginning of the year and grow to about 25-30 minutes.

How can my child be successful?
When there is a high level of parent involvement, students achieve more success. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come to class each week! A consistent parent is asked to be there the first Tuesday of each month. Ideally, this would be the parent who can help with practicing. In class, parents will be taking a hands-on role helping and learning alongside their child. It is important that they can assist their child at home, making sure they practice the weekly assignments, and share all emailed recordings and videos with their budding violinist.

Where to get an instrument and how do I know the size?
We recommend Hammond Ashley Violin of Issaquah for rental instruments. If you choose not to rent from them, please choose another shop with high quality instruments. Quality instruments will set your student up for success and be much easier to play. Violins come in various sizes; instruments that are too large make learning difficult, can cause injury, and lead to poor technique.
